How can I take the CLT?

You can take the CLT in person at your high school or online from the comfort of your own home.

If your school administers the CLT, you will probably know that already. But if you're curious, ask your testing coordinator to check. They will either administer it on paper or in a computer lab.

If your high school is not providing the CLT for you, you can register online to take the remotely proctored exam, which you can take from the comfort of your own home.

Taking the Remote Test

Students must take the test ALONE in a closed, well-lit room.

Students must remain alone in the room, with no talking, for the duration of the test.

The official CLT guide suggests letting everyone in your family and anyone else that might enter the room know that you are taking the test. They also provide a printable sign that you should hang on the door, reminding people not to enter!

Be sure to test in a room that has a reliable internet connection.

Your computer and keyboard must be on a table or desk. Students must sit on a normal chair or stool (not a bed, couch, or bean bag chair).

Testing Requirements

You will need a laptop or desktop.

You MAY NOT use a tablet or mobile device.

The computer you use must have a functional web-cam and speakers. They can be internal or external web-cams and speakers.

Test proctors will use these to monitor your test environment and ensure exam integrity - aka, make sure you don't cheat!

Students must use Chrome or Firefox.

Students must have a valid, non-expired photo ID: Passports, Driver’s License or Permit, state IDs, Current High School ID, Current HSLDA Student ID, College ID, or Military/Military Dependent ID all qualify.

If you do not have a valid ID, you can print a CLT ID from their official website.

Once you sign up for the exam, you will be required to perform a practice run of your testing environment, to ensure all of the requirements are in place (this is not difficult to do - once you sign up for the test, you will receive instructions).  

Other Permitted (not Required) Items for the CLT

1. Up to 6 sheets of blank scratch paper. Lined, graph, and printer paper are all acceptable.  
2. Up to 2 writing implements. Pens, pencils, and mechanical pencils.
3. Water or other beverage.
4. Eyeglasses
5. Mouse and Mouse pad
6. Lamp
7. Extension cords and power strips
8. Fan or other ambient noise source
9. Loose tissues
10. Chewing gum

Prohibited Items when taking the CLT

You MAY NOT have:

1. Calculator
2. Headphones/Earbuds
3. Watch
4. Phone, tablet, or other mobile device.
5. Additional monitor, television, printer, or other electronic device.
6. Books within arm's reach and/or open. (Bookshelves in the room are permitted, as long as the books are closed.)
7. Educational/reference material or posters of relevance.
8. Snacks
9. Items that cover your ears.

Prohibited Actions when taking the CLT

You MAY NOT:

1. Use any dictionary or translation tools
2. Use keyboard shortcuts
3. Speak or read aloud during the exam (students may mouth words to themselves or read them in a barely audible whisper, but nothing more unless they receive a testing accommodation. For testing accommodations, see CLTexam.com/testing-accommodations/)
